MBA Consulting Ltd was appointed to deliver the full structural and civil engineering design and consultancy services for this complex residential coastal redevelopment.

Located on a steeply sloping brownfield site previously occupied by a large hotel, the project presented significant engineering challenges. These included the need to manage difficult ground conditions, significant level changes across the site and the demands of a sensitive coastal environment.

A split-level building design was used to work with the natural topography, resulting in tiered floor plates, stepped circulation routes and multiple retaining wall scenarios. Extensive structural input was required to design the substructure and retaining elements, which are embedded into the hillside to stabilise the site and minimise the visual and physical massing of the development.

On the civil engineering side, MBA provided detailed site regrading and earthworks strategies to enable effective drainage and access. A bespoke stormwater management system was developed to address the site’s runoff challenges, incorporating SuDS principles and attenuation to meet local authority requirements.
