Clayworks! Project, Wheal Martyn

Location: Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, St Austell

Status: Due for completion 2020

Client: Wheal Martyn Trust.

The Clayworks! Project involved the refurbishment of the abandoned industrial buildings on the site to form a new exhibition space together with an extension to accommodate a new learning space.

A sympathetic approach was required throughout the design to ensure the existing structures were preserved as much as possible due to its significant status as being listed as an Ancient Monument with Historic England. The buildings date back to the early 19th century and were used up until the late 1960’s as a major part of the clay works manufacturing process.

This was a challenging project requiring various engineering solutions to be sought for the proposals in conjunction with the many site constraints. We are extremely proud to have been involved with this fantastic local project and preserving these building for the next generations to come.
