MBA were appointed by Cornwall Council to carry out all structural engineering aspects of the Heartlands Regeneration project. The project was funded by the BIG Lottery Fund, Cornwall Council, Homes and Community Agency and European Funding. On delivery of the project, the independent charity “Heartlands Trust” assumed ownership of the development.
The project involved the regeneration of over 10 acres of heavily contaminated land surrounding the derelict Grade 2* Listed Robinson Shaft complex, providing a heritage visitor attraction including a free-to-visit exhibition, community centre, energy centre and refurbished head-frame and engine house. New buildings included a multi-purpose community hall, art gallery, studios for local artists and residential units.
Design targets for the project were to achieve Zero Carbon and for all new and refurbished buildings to achieve a BREEAM Excellent and CSH Level 4 rating.
